Review: Panic by Lauren Oliver

Panic

Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a dead-end town of 12,000 people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do.

Heather never thought she would compete in Panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors, where the stakes are high and the payoff is even higher. She’d never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought.

Dodge has never been afraid of Panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game, he’s sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he’s not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for.

For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of them—and the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.
I received this galley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Edelweiss and Harper Collins.

When I heard Lauren Oliver had a new book coming out, I jumped at the chance to read it. Who doesn't love an Oliver book? I really enjoyed Panic. There were some parts in the middle that I started to get bored with, but overall it was an enjoyable, easy read. Though I think the cover is really stupid looking and doesn't make any sense to the story.

Heather lives in a pretty boring town. There is never anything to do. Years ago, some seniors came up with Panic, a game that lasts the whole summer. Participants do all these dangerous things, and the one left standing at the end (the lowest scored person gets eliminated, some get hurt, other quit) can win thousands of dollars (like 50 grand!). I thought the premise was interesting and original. Heather decides to participate, never thinking she will get as far as she does. No one knows who started it, or what the rules really are, but everyone seems to want to participate.

A few years earlier, Dodge's sister participated and ended up getting really hurt. Now he wants revenge on those who wronged her. This added a thriller type situation to the story. You never knew who to trust or what the characters were thinking. This kept me intrigued until the very end. I had no idea how it was going to end!

Panic is a captivating story. I am so excited to hear what others think about it!
